Outflanking wolf list of DOOM!!!

Used without permission, will remove if requested

So last night after games night, a few of us had a jar or two and chewed the fat over random GW related stuff.  One of the things that came up was a possible loop-hole kind of thing in the Space Wolves codex (I know, shock, horror).  In the description of Saga of the Hunter it says "Infantry only" and where it can be selected in the Army List section there is a little * and at the bottom of the page it says it can only be taken by those in power armour that aren't either on a bike or using a jump pack.  In the Wargear section it does say that those who take a Thunderwolf mount count as cavalry, so in reality the following list won't work.  However there are those that would say that since in the Army List section it specifically singles out bikes and jump pack but not thunderwolves that its allowed - really lame reasoning, not one I'd use, but this is all a bit of fun and got us thinking about what kind of army you could build based on this.  So, considering the models I already have at my disposal we're going to see if we can try this out sometime in the future.  The list I'll take is:

  • Wolf Guard Battle Leader, bolt-pistol, thunder-hammer, Thunderwolf, WTN, WTT, Saga of the Hunter, 2 x Fenrisian Wolves   (190 pts)
  • Wolf Guard Battle Leader, storm-shield, close combat weapon, Thunderwolf, WTN, WTT, Saga of the Hunter, 2 x Fenrisian Wolves   (190 pts)
  • Wolf Guard Battle Leader, bolt-pistol, frost-axe, Thunderwolf, WTN, WTT, Saga of the Hunter, 2 x Fenrisian Wolves   (185 pts)
  • Wolf Guard Battle Leader, storm-shield, close combat weapon, meltabombs, Thunderwolf, WTN, WTT, Saga of the Hunter, 2 x Fenrisian Wolves   (195 pts)
  • Lone Wolf, MotW, storm-shield, meltabombs   (70 pts)
  • Wolf Guard, combi-melta, power-fist, 5 x Grey Hunters, meltagun, MotW, Wolf Standard, Lascannon Razorback   (223 pts)
  • Wolf Guard, combi-melta, power-fist, 5 x Grey Hunters, meltagun, MotW, Wolf Standard, Lascannon Razorback   (223 pts)
  • Wolf Guard, combi-melta, power-fist, 5 x Grey Hunters, meltagun, MotW, Wolf Standard, Assault-cannon Razorback   (223 pts)
  • 1499 pts
The load-outs for the WGBLs are based solely on the models I have built for my Thunderwolves which is why I've had to give one guy meltabombs to avoid the same wargear sets, all have Hunter obviously, and they all have 2 wolves as they are all susceptible to S10 weapons causing Instant Death.  The three units are my standard minimum troop selection with the Razorbacks acting as heavy fire support, and the minimal Grey Hunter units tooled up to give them some punch if/when they get into combat.  The Lone Wolf is just to fill in the remaining points and maybe draw some fire.

Now I am very aware that this list isn't entirely legal - but as I said before this was just a bit of a thought experiment.  So, outside of that, what do you all think?  I think it'd be a lot of fun to play but extremely fragile, but the effect of those WGBLs piling on from the sides would certainly lead to some interesting scenarios.

  1. It's also illegal because you cannot take the same Saga twice. ;) But if it was, taking a horribly powerful TWC character and 2-3 units of Scouts could be really devastating and quite characterful. Add in a couple of Drop Pods and fun ensues.

    Unfortunately, it's a no-go
