Space Wolf Special Characters

Something came up during the game on Friday night that I would call somewhat a moment of realisation for me. Perhaps a lot of you had already realised this, but I came to note that for most of the Space Wolf special characters, they are far more effective when teamed up with a complimentary squad than they could ever be on their own.

Take Ragnar and his performance on Friday. In the Lion and the Wolf confrontation not only did he lose, he lost in close combat. He'd taken a wound before getting there, but still he lost to a Dark Angels character in assault and this is Ragnar, supposedly the master of assaults amongst the Space Wolves. Compare this to his performance in the game along with the Wolf Guard squad he was with. They single handedly cleared an entire side of the board of numerous different tyranids, the squad dealing out 10's of attacks at I5 with +1S. They were monstrous.

Having gone back to look over the other characters in the codex it is pretty obvious to me now that almost all of the special characters in the Space Wolf codex will perform so much better when teamed up with a complementary squad (often tooled up wolf guard). Its a bit of a difference from the Space Marines codex where many of the characters can be taken on their own and still be just as effective as ever.

Perhaps I'm stating something far too obvious, but wanted to put this out there for your views, and to see what others opinions on this matter might be.

Long Fangs

I finally managed to put together some of those lovely new Long Fangs - chosing a double heavy-bolter, double missile-launcher and a single lascannon combination. At 145pts thats not too bad! Other than the lone wolf, these were my first time working with the new space wolf box of bits and there is so much there. I've only used a couple of items on each character (mostly heads) and it very easily gives them enough difference to set them apart from regular devestator marines.

Lone Wolf

Here is the first of the many models that I have managed to paint over the last few months - my Lone Wolf. He comes in at 70pts with a storm-shield, Mark of the Wulfen and meltabombs and I can't wait to get him out on the battlefield to wreak some havoc.

2009: painting points

So I've already covered how I did for my 2009 resolutions and set out some resolutions for 2010. I'd also like to make a final update of my painting points. Although I haven't posted pictures in a while (issues with finding time and space to take the photo's), I've got them now and I'll be posting them all soon. I'd like to list what I've managed to get painted this year (to table top standard) for the record:
  • 20 Grey Hunters (20 pts)
  • 15 Blood Claws (15 pts)
  • 6 Long Fangs (6 pts)
  • 7 Terminators (14 pts)
  • 1 Lone Wolf (1 pt)
  • 1 Dreadnought (5 pts)
  • 1 Wolf Guard Leader (5 pts)
  • Ragnar (5 pts)
  • Ulrik (5 pts)
  • 1 Land Raider Crusader/Redeemer (10 pts)
  • 30 Guardsmen (30 pts - see 40kroughnecks)
Which comes to a grand total of 116 pts!

I also managed to get 3 models up to a finished level (at my current painting level, I'm still not happy with them), and have 2 drop pods, a rhino and a few other assorted models somewhat painted. A pretty darn good year all round.
Pictures of the new models will follow over the next couple of weeks.

Cheers - bG
